State legislatures are increasingly addressing school safety and security policies. Reunification procedures and drill mandates have gained attention, particularly with Florida’s HB 1421, which was signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis on June 7.   

The panelists will examine the impact of FL HB 1421, including its implications both immediately for Florida school districts as well as national impact with a specific focus on plans for reunifying students and guardians following an emergency.

  • Selected as the Sumter County School District’s School Safety Specialist in May 2018, following the tragedy at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School
  • 34 years of law enforcement experience working and supervising in a variety of divisions, which include, patrol, tactical operations, community policing, training, narcotics, and homicide
  • Served as an adjunct instructor for several colleges and law enforcement training centers, providing instruction throughout the United States  
  • Served on numerous state committees to strengthen and standardize school safety within Florida including threat assessments, harm hardening and mitigation and Florida’s safe school assessment tool as well as on the board for the National Homicide Investigators Association

  • 22 years of law enforcement experience with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office
