About the Moderator and Panelists

Michele Gay,
Executive Director and Co-founder,
Safe and Sound Schools

Mother, educator, and co-founder of Safe and Sound Schools, Michele Gay chose to take action after losing her daughter Josephine Grace on December 14, 2012, in the Sandy Hook School tragedy. Since that time, Michele has channeled her work as an advocate, improving safety and security in schools and communities across our country. Now a nationally and internationally recognized public speaker and school safety expert, Michele reaches audiences and consults with all levels of community institutions — schools; municipalities; houses of worship; educational and public safety leadership; state and federal governments; law enforcement agencies; and top news media sources.

Teresa Ritenour,
Director of Student Support Services,
FCPS

Teresa Ritenour serves as the Director of Student Support Services with Frederick County Public Schools in Virginia. Her dedication to student needs and passion for student success has shaped a 27-year career in education, from classroom teacher to instructional leadership roles including school dean, assistant principal at the middle school and high school levels, middle school principal and currently, director of Student Support Services. Additionally, Teresa owns School Management Consulting, LLC, contracting with public and private schools to provide support, strategies and consulting services to address instructional, administrative and safety requirements and challenges.

First Lieutenant Jason Cornwell,
Frederick County Sheriff's Office

First Lieutenant Cornwell leads the School Safety Division for the Frederick County, Virginia, Sheriff’s Office. He is a 22-year veteran in law enforcement and has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice. Since taking over the School Safety Division, First Lieutenant Cornwell has helped organize and implement programs such as Tribute Tuesday’s – Back the Blue, Shop with a Cop, and Lunch Buddies. He was instrumental in organizing a large-scale active shooter drill in 2017, multiple “active attack” tabletop exercises, and annual joint Rescue Task Force training. First Lieutenant Cornwell is a part of the Department of Criminal Justice Services School-Law Enforcement Advisory Committee and Threat Assessment Advisory Committee for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Joseph Strong,
Principal, Redbud Run Elementary School,
FCPS

Joseph Strong has spent 24 years in education, with the last 18 years as a principal in three different elementary schools in Frederick County, Virginia. In all three schools, he has focused on creating a student-focused, positive, and safe school culture while establishing high expectations for student achievement.

Elizabeth (Beth) Williamson,
School Safety and Security Analyst,
FCPS

Beth has 25 years of experience in educational administrative support, 14 years of which have been focused on division operations, school design and construction, and school safety and security. She has been a stakeholder in three school builds and three renovations and has managed budgets of over 80 million dollars. Beth is currently responsible for safety and security in 20 buildings within FCPS, serving approximately 14,000 students.
